FAQ: Xilix Waterjet Cutting and Sorting Systems

What makes Xilix Systems products different from traditional blade-based cutting systems?

Xilix waterjet conveyor systems replace manual labor and traditional blade-cutting machines by eliminating the inconsistencies and safety risks of worn-out blades. Instead, Xilix systems are powered by the world’s fastest ultra‑high‑pressure (UHP) waterjet pump, engineered and manufactured in Baxter Springs, KS, USA by KMT Waterjet.

By eliminating sharpening and replacing blades, safety risks are minimized, and the aftermarket replacement costs of blades are an immediate tremendous savings. Waterjet technology creates a clean, precise, non-contact cut that improves yield and helps extend the shelf life of fresh-cut produce.

How does waterjet cutting improve produce yield compared to blade cutting?

Waterjet cutting avoids the crushing and tearing caused by metal blades. The result is:

  • Higher usable yield
  • Less trim loss
  • Cleaner, shelf-life-enhancing surfaces

This directly impacts profitability across your packing or processing line.

How do Xilix Systems’ conveyors help decrease costs by reducing manual labor?

Automated waterjet cutting, trimming, and conveyor sorting significantly reduce knife stations and manual inspection points. Xilix customers often cut labor hours dramatically cutting with multiple water jet nozzles, set up for portion control products, allowing teams to be redeployed to higher-value work while maintaining or even increasing throughput.

What role do customized conveyor systems engineered by Xilix Systems matter?

Every Xilix System designs customized conveyors specifically for the produce type, shape, and volume. These waterjet conveyors, powered by KMT Waterjet, ensure consistent product being sorted to the waterjet, reducing damaging product cells, and increase accuracy—all of which assure higher yield, lower waste and an increase in capacity to cut more product.

How does Xilix waterjet cutting produce improve produce shelf life?

Studies have proven that blade cutting can bruise or crush produce, increasing oxidation. Waterjet cutting provides a clean, smooth surface that slows microbial growth, helping processors deliver fresher-looking product with a longer shelf window.

Which grocery store produce items are ideal for Xilix systems?

Xilix waterjet conveyor machines are commonly used for slitting celery, French/green beans, carrots, cucumbers, asparagus, lettuce, and more. We also support specialized cuts for snack packs, tray-ready packs, calyx removal, portion control, and custom lengths.

How does Xilix Systems waterjet conveyor machines help minimize waste?

Precision cutting reduces over-trim, miscuts, and rejected product. When combined with sorting automation, processors see lower damage percentages—and more portion controlled products for automated sorting and packaging.

What type of ROI can produce processors expect when waterjet cutting on Xilix Systems waterjet conveyors compared to blade cutting?

Many customers achieve ROI in 6–18 months. Savings are driven by:

  • Reduced labor
  • Zero blade replacement (immediate savings)
  • Higher throughput
  • Movable water cutting nozzles for cutting at different lengths
  • Minimal waste
  • Increased yield per pound
This combination maximizes profits and stabilizes production.
Can Xilix Systems engineers design a conveyor to integrate with my existing equipment?

The Xilix engineering team designs systems that integrate with wash stations, inspection, grading, packaging, and palletizing. Customized conveyor connections ensure smooth transitions between upstream and downstream equipment.

What information is required for a project quote?

Xilix tailors each system using details like:
• Product type
• Throughput needs
• Cut lengths or specs
• Shelf-life goals
• Waste/yield benchmarks
• Plant layout
• Integration needs
We also perform test cuts when needed.
